Mr Aldous is retiring from Duncanrig Secondary School. This blog has been set up for any friends and former pupils to leave a message for him to enjoy in the many sunny days ahead!!
May I be one of the first to congratulate you on your retirement. You were an excellent teacher and I have many happy memories of being in your class - not many are to do with the material though ;-). Your door was always open to pupils (and even former pupils) who needed help and advice and this was greatly appreciated.
Hi there, I had to think a bit...mm, mr Aldous, but of course, mr Aldous!!!! I was your Dutch pupil for one year (1993-1994). Although for me it was just a year out with no high ambitions on the Maths, I learned quite a bit. Complex numbers! When I went to the Technical Uni in Delft, I was the only one who had heard about them.
Well, enjoy your retirement and if you feel like travelling now you have time, don't hesitate to drop by at my home in the Netherlands. Email: anneliesvanderham75@hotmail.com
I was in your 2nd(?) year maths class and i thought you were one of the best teachers that we ever had! Enjoy your well earned retirement Have fun - Gillian Docherty
Without doubt one of my favourite teachers , his passion for teaching was incredible i enjoyed his classes immensely. However his maths related jokes werent exactly up to scratch :) Liverpools loss was duncanrigs gain. Now in retirement he'll have alot more time to spend with his old mate Pythagoras. Best of luck Mr Aldous
I was a pupil at Duncanrig between 98-02 you were my teacher during 3rd & 4th year. Though I've never had to use Pythagoras' theorem since then, it's ingrained in my mind forever!!
just wanted to drop you a big thank you for being such a great teacher and passing on your wonderful passion for maths. Always had really good memories of your class and all the interesting and often humorous maths stories.
you may pleased to know that I graduated 2 years ago with a degree in Mathematics!
I was in that same class with Yasmine Beltagui and thoroughly enjoyed being challenged. In fact, I was just reminiscing the other day about how much fun your maths class was!
I now live in Greenville, South Carolina, USA, and have been teaching third grade (Primary 4) for three years. I always start every day with maths!!
Hi Mr Aldous I just wanted to wish you all the best as you retire. You were an inspirational teacher and you passion for maths is what sparked mine. As you know, I'm now following in your footsteps as a maths teacher and loving every minute. Thanks for everything as best wishes for the future. Jennifer Clark jclark@stonelaw.s-lanark.sch.uk
My very best wishes to you. I was at Duncanrig from '78 to 84. I don't remember much about the mathematics but I remember our horse racing conversations! I borrowed your Sea Pigeon biography! What a horse.
I guess I must have picked up some mathematics though because I won the 3rd year prize at university (the fact that the tie breaking question was about horse racing had nothing to do with it!).
I'm now a photonics engineer. No, I don't know what it is either.
My email address is carlinp@cox.net if you ever get really bored in your retirement.
Mr Auldous taught me Maths during my second year at Duncanrig. It was probably at this stage that I decided that Maths was of interest to me and this lead to me studying the subject at university – which I would like to thank him for.
I remember his lessons being very interesting and his antidotes were very funny.
I wish to congratulate Mr Auldous on his retirement and wish him all the best for the future.
I have had the privelage of not only being a pupil of yours but also of being a collegue. You are an outstanding teacher and mentor and the school is losing one of their best, All the best for the future,
you truly are one of those rare teachers that can inspire nomatter what subject they are teaching. i always enjoyed your lessons and i still have the novel that you gave me which i proudly show off to anyone! thanks to the suport of you and mrs rennie i am now just about to finish my teacher training to become an english teacher (although i am taking a year off first to have my little boy) i will never forget how fair and consistent you were, and more importantly - how you always ended up covered in green chalk!!! thanks for being my teacher Holly Gordon (1998 - 2003)
Advice/ make sure the wife keeps on working. Enjoyed your company at Duncanrig, thank god bloggs not around when I went AWOL! Good Luck Douglas McHardy
I hope you enjoy your retirement!! I really struggled with Maths (and still do)but you made it so much easier for me as you had good patience & understood my difficulties in trying to grasp the subject - unlike many other teachers I experienced. So I would like to thank you for that. I always remeber you being very encouraging and boosting my confidence leveles ! If only more could have been like you !
To everybody who kindly commented on my retirment, thankyou You have no idea how overwhelmingly nice it is to receive such lovely comments from you. I sincerely hope life treats you all well in the future. Thanks again, Les Aldous

Mr Aldous,
ReplyDeleteWOW! Where the time has gone?
Wonder if there's a mathematical equation to work it out??
Do remember the fun times you created in class with your lessons and the odd chat about sport.
Enjoy your retirement and everything you do from now on.
Congratulations.
